A monster is roaming the country snuffing out the lives of families. They are committing acts of malice that shock small-town lives unused to such wanton brutality. The murders span twenty years. The murder weapon mainly is an axe, the victims struck mostly unaware in their slumber. The attacks unfold in the south, midwest, northwest…and some murders are seemingly solved with swift justice meted out, whether by law or vigilantes. False confessions muddy the waters of the whodunits. The proximity of the railroads never figures in to the police investigations of the various murders. The primitive technology and techniques utilized by small-town police deters comprehensive sleuthing. Private eyes look to be honest on the surface but wind up being charlatans. The body count rises, no one at home is spared, and in some cases young women are violated. The authors posit that the aforementioned man on the train is responsible for the havoc over two decades.

The Man on the Train may be considered a book of speculation, or it just may be brilliant. The two authors conducted years of research into the mayhem that plagued the backwaters and suburbs of the late 19th and early 20th century. A suspect is named, a possible motive provided, but the horror will never disappear. A true crime/history read of the year!
