Twenty years after The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, which won numerous awards, and is still being read today, and with other books (Ex Libris, At Large and At Small) along the way, Anne Fadiman is here with a new delight, The Wine Lover’s Daughter: A Memoir (Farrar, Straus & Giroux). This memoir of her father, her mother, and her own life is a story writ large with books, writing, and wine. The last, in her father’s case, was a passion, though to many, books would have seemed what Clifton Fadiman lived for. He was a major New York book editor and a New Yorker editor by the age of thirty. He was also a great lover of wine, as this generous, spirited narrative shows. Along with other writing, Anne Fadiman is presently the Francis Writer-in-Residence at Yale.
