Following her parents’ sudden deaths in a car crash, Astra Davies is left to largely fend for herself. Her aunt, true to being raised before World War I, thinks the best thing for her grieving niece is to marry quickly, even if most of the men she throws her way are distasteful for one reason or another. Astra, however, would rather have at least some modicum of choice, even if landing a wealthy husband would solve the sudden poverty she’s been landed in (and is desperately trying to hide from her high-society friends).

Between a maid with complicated connections and the revelation of financial fraud, however, Astra has more than enough on her plate without trying to find a husband. She has a stormy sea to navigate, but even if she is severely lacking in funds, she at least has the gumption to manage all on her own.

A Bright Young Thing is a fun ride through 1930s English high society filled with vivacious, fascinating characters and twists and turns aplenty. Even the slightly forced witty banter is nothing short of delightful. I heartily enjoyed this book, and I’m sure you will too.
