A Friend Like You
Squirrel has been very busy getting everything he will need ready for winter. He has plenty of nuts stored away and his nest is warm and tight. The only thing squirrel doesn’t have is a friend to share it with. Then bird comes flying in and lands nearby. Bird has come from a long way and is very tired. Squirrel offers Bird a nut, but Bird says he only eats worms. These two are very different! But Squirrel gets Bird to try the nut and Bird likes it! Then Squirrel asks Bird to climb with him, but Bird flies instead. Even though these two are very different they find a lot of fun things they can do together by trying new things. This is how friendships are formed.
Authors Andrea Schomburg and Barbara Röttgen use their knowledge of poetry to write a lyrical story that will have kids saying, “Read it again, Daddy!” The story very unobtrusively teaches an important lesson for the youngest of children about friendship and how rewarding it can be to accept those who aren’t like them. The illustrations by Sean Julian are absolutely enchanting and the perfect complement to this sweet story.
