Bruno, Chief of Police in St. Denis, a village in the Dordogne region of France, learns that a British woman, Monika Felder, has failed to turn up for cooking lessons at a local farm run by his friends Pamela and Miranda. He calls on his colleagues to help locate the woman.

Unfortunately, Bruno is too late to save Monika and her male companion. It looks like a murder plus suicide, but Bruno isn’t convinced, mainly because the male victim is a man with a military past. While looking into the deaths, he also has to deal with a few local problems. Paulette, the star of the local girl’s rugby team, which Bruno coaches, is likely to win a place on the national team but what will happen if she is pregnant? As she tries to keep her affair secret, the whole village seems intent on gossiping about it. Between his work on the investigation, long lunches with his friends, and dealing with confounding French bureaucracy, Bruno finds himself in the company of Isabel, a woman he can’t get out of his system. If only she wanted to stay in St. Denis with Bruno, everything would be prefect.

A Taste of Vengeance is another clever, entertaining story from Martin Walker. I can’t wait for the next installment.
