A little girl loses her mother but not her faith in her mother’s stories. A father’s funeral brings a family together. Old friends are reunited by tragedy. The ghosts of past mistakes haunt a man in his new relationship.

The stories collected in All Over Ireland all resonate with a beautiful melancholy, marinating in sad moments but always touched with warmth and light. These stories feel much more expansive than their brief run times, like glimpses of a larger, fully-realized world. You don’t doubt that these people existed before the first page, and you know they’ll continue to exist well beyond the last word.

There’s also a patience in these stories that’s rare. So many stories rush from scene to scene to fill in everything, whereas these tales take their time, lingering both on the page and in the memory of the reader. I found myself reading slower, giving each story more time to digest and process before moving on to the next one.

Not every story in All Over Ireland will be your cup of tea, but you’ll definitely find something worth your time inside.
