The garden is a wonderful place to live, whether you are Mr. Gnome or little Jack, who live above ground, or Charlotte the ant, Yvonne the mole, or others who live below the garden in the rich soil. One day, something big and heavy falls from the sky and plunks little Jack on the head, then rests on the dirt. Soon it cracks open and a small root works its way into the soil, blocking the way the ants are building their tunnel. As the root grows, it intrudes into Yvonne’s bathroom and other roots from the plant find their way into other homes. Meanwhile, above ground the plant grows larger and larger, breaking Mr. Gnome’s fence and blocking his door. They have to cut it down. Or do they?

This is a cute story that will give little ones some information about how a seed grows and what creatures live underground, but this certainly isn’t a science book. Author and illustrator Marianne Dubuc has populated her story with charming little creatures, and the illustrations are filled with wonderful details that will enchant little ones. Children will enjoy reading this book over and over.
