The Muppets are awesome. They’re hilarious and brightly colored, so you’d think a coloring book would be an easy layup for a publisher, wouldn’t you?

Yeah, you would. And this coloring book is all right, I guess, but it seems like a quick cash-in rather than a genuine effort to give adult coloring-book fans something to work with.

The characters themselves feature in about half of the pages, with the other half covered by repetitive patterns of chickens, drums, circles, directors’ chairs, and other tessellated junk. Several of these pages have black backgrounds, which just feels like someone’s already beaten me to the punch. And, unfortunately, one of the pages with the characters has vertical lines on the page marking the repeat of the pattern, somewhat marring the finished product.

Now, that’s not to say there’s nothing to recommend here. All of your favorite Muppets get a fair bit of page time (though Rizzo and Dr. Teeth get a little shortchanged, and I don’t think Sam Eagle appears at all). The pages are nice and thick, so there’s little chance of colors bleeding through from one side of a page to the other.

But, in the end, it feels a little lackluster.
