Caeley Looney’s Charlie’s Space Adventures: Mission to the Moon sends a golden retriever to orbit the moon with his owner, Cate. The setup earns its sweetness.

Charlie asks questions. Cate never brushes them off. When Charlie asks why the moon has spots, Cate takes him to the moon to find out. That’s the whole premise.

The launch sequence moves fast. Two pages, one page-turn, and they’re already among the stars. No stalling, no extra exposition about rocket mechanics. Kids reading this at bedtime won’t lose patience waiting for the good part.

Half the moon goes dark as they orbit. Charlie panics: did they break it? The fear works. Cate compares the shadow to a nap in the shade. The line sticks, and it does the job a good analogy should: it turns an abstract idea into something a four-year-old already understands from experience.

The science comes naturally and without a lecture. Moon phases, lunar orbit, the dark far side: dialogue carries it, not narration. The “All About the Moon” spread closes with numbers: 238,855 miles away, gravity at 1/6 of Earth’s, boot prints still sitting in the dust with no atmosphere to disturb them. That spread alone could double as a classroom handout.

Nadia Ronquillo’s illustrations are wonderful in bringing emotion to the story. Charlie’s ears drop when he thinks he’s broken the moon, and you feel it. The zero-gravity spread floats a tennis ball, a toy duck, and a fish toy. The color work shifts from warm yellows on Earth to cold blues in space, and the shift alone tells half the story before you read any of the words.

Near the end, Cate says it straight: “Sometimes things look scary, especially things we don’t understand.” Charlie’s answer: “That’s why we always ask questions.”

Would I hand this to a friend with a curious kid, age three to seven? Yes. The science and the story need each other here. Kids who ask “why” fifty times a day will see Charlie. Parents will see Cate. This is the book for both.Charlie’s Space Adventures: Mission to the Moon is a lunar science book that respects a kid’s curiosity and a kid’s fear all on the same page.
