Cocoa Beach: A Novel
I read Cocoa Beach in one sitting. It is a suspenseful, fast read, although there were a couple of twists and turns that lost me along the way. The story would have been just as exciting and more believable if a couple of subplots were less convoluted. But Williams’ characters are exceptionally well drawn.
Virginia Fortescue, the story’s protagonist, has an extraordinary sense of integrity and steadfastness. These qualities drive the story and present opportunities for those with fewer scruples to take an advantage of her. However, because of Ms. Fortescue’s fortitude, you never doubt that she will figure things out–the question is, will it be too late?
The story’s dual setting in France during World War I and Florida during the Roaring Twenties provides a stark and exciting contrast. I learned a lot about both places. If you want an absorbing mini-vacation, this book is for you.
