Heredia is an introspective, middle-aged private investigator whose only friends are a cat, a newspaper vendor, and an often-absent girlfriend. Not ideal detective material perhaps, but he is persistent. And he needs to be. Hired to investigate the killing of German Reyes in an apparent robbery, he soon realizes that the heart of the mystery lies in the dark days of disappearances, torture, and death during Pinochet’s brutal regime. The murdered man, a former detainee in Villa Grimaldi, the dictator’s most feared interrogation center, had compiled enough information to expose the prison’s overseer, now a prominent Santiago citizen. Heredia moves through low-end bars and seedy ex-officers clubs, steadily progressing from one unwilling source to the next until the truth is laid bare. The author evokes with equal skill the shame of those who failed to speak out against the atrocities, the horrific memories and crippling fears of those who suffered within the villa’s walls, and the constant dread of exposure and punishment felt by those responsible for this black episode in Chile’s history. It is this tense atmosphere, rather than the complexity or subtlety of the plot, that makes Dark Echoes of the Past a fascinating read.
