Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Volume 1 – Weapons of Past Destruction

The further we get from Christopher Eccleston’s tenure as the Doctor, the more favorably I look on it. The Northern accent, the goofy seriousness–I miss it.

And this feeling was confirmed in the first volume of the Ninth Doctor comics, Weapons of Past Destruction. Despite my loyalties lying with Ten, they say you never forget your first, and so it was great to run with Nine and Rose again. And Captain Jack in all his pansexual glory. This isn’t the world’s greatest story, and it will mainly be of interest to existing fans, but to those of us already established, this is good stuff. Past Destruction has a lot great stuff going for it–giant killer robots, space-dwelling metallic centaurs, an intergalactic black market arms bazaar.

Weapons of Past Destruction is a solid story with cool aliens galloping through space with spears, which work much better in comic-form than they would have on television, where they would likely have been rendered in cheesy CG. All in all, a great read for Whovians, especially those who were happier pre-Moffat. This book was a lot of fun. As Nine would say: Fantastic!
