Edgeland is an island where day and night each last 72 hours, ruled by Suns and Shadows, respectively. Wren is a Grayling who lives in tunnels and survives by begging or thieving. Alec is employed by one of the bone houses, helping give comfort to the grieving before sending their dead into the Drain, which holds the entry into heaven. Wren is suspected of murder and needs to get out of Edgeland. When her entire savings is lost in a fire, her next thought is to jump on one of the boats taking the dead and their riches to the Drain, and Alec joins her. However, their plan goes awry, and they fall into the Drain, with no hope of getting out.

This book is set in the same world as Nightfall, though Edgeland is thousands of miles south. Wren and Alec are both likable, and the growth of both characters throughout the book just makes them more so. The constant discord between the Suns and Shadows provides a backdrop for the adventure, where religion is the primary source of disagreement. While not as thrilling or horrifying as Nightfall, this one is still not for the easily spooked.
