Ten years ago, Jessie Cole’s younger sister disappeared, and she was left caring for her four-year-old niece. That same night, Ben Morrison was in a car accident that left him physically scarred and gave him amnesia. Now Jessie is working as a private eye, searching for a different missing girl, always hoping she will discover what happened to her sister. Ben sees a picture of Jessie’s sister on TV and something triggers in him; somehow he knows her. Since he’s a crime reporter, he’s set on finding out what really happened that night and contacts Jessie to work the case together. They know that they will eventually find the answers they seek if they focus on Her Last Day.

This book is labelled as a Jessie Cole thriller, so you know this is only the beginning of her adventures, but what a fantastic start. It’s a short read, so there is not as much depth to the characters as there could be as well as a couple of plot lines all coming together, leaving less time to get to know them. Besides the search for the sister, Jessie is also facing a criminal charge, trying to find a missing girl, and getting on the bad side of a serial killer known as the Heartless Killer. So quite a lot of things to handle in a short novel. I think the author did a great job wrapping things up nicely, I just wouldn’t have been opposed to more depth. There is a fair amount of time spent on the Heartless Killer, which involves a lot of torture scenes. I have a really hard time reading those, so just be forewarned. This book also made me more paranoid than I already am, to the point where I’ll never leave a spare key outside or basically ever talk to someone I don’t know. The author definitely knows how to write a thriller. I look forward to the next installment in the Jessie Cole series.
