Here is Where I Walk: Episodes From a Life in the Forest

This author lives and walks in the Presidio region of San Francisco. The subtitle of her book is Episodes from a Life in the Forest. The writer has been influenced by the great nature writer and scientist, Loren Eisley. After reading this hymn to nature, it is clear that Roberts, like Eisley, reflects a wonderful combination of scientific thought and poetic expression. So it is natural that I loved this book and feel that anyone would be similarly inspired by her walks in nature. This book will have particular resonance for those who are familiar with San Francisco neighborhoods. That being said, the author’s great writing ability will entrance most readers. The author has lived in other metropolitan areas and poses the question of why there is no exit strategy for dying buildings and communities. We continue the advance of progress, but what happens after a building’s useful life has ended? She has lived in Detroit where she has seen housing foreclosed and discarded. In light of this, the reuse and reimagining of the Presidio is a remarkable success.
