High Flying
“Once you have tasted flight,
you will forever walk the earth,
with your eyes turned skyward,
for there you have been,
and there you will always
long to return.”
—Leonardo da Vinci
Skylar’s life has not been an easy one. She grew up with a mother who had been damaged by drugs and rejection, never met her father, and after her mother passed away, moved in with her grandfather, who was always trying to control every aspect of her life—both physically and emotionally. Apart from all that, and after tragically losing two of her best friends, it was time for Skylar to say enough is enough, get away from the toxic people she called family and finally start living the way she always wanted, free.
She found refuge in flying, and so she became a stunt pilot, performing in airshows as a way to regain control of her life and find the adrenaline and emotional release she desired. Through flying, she found her dream job and the man to spend the rest of her life with. But, during a stunt airshow, something happens, and when Skylar lands, she finds out she’s traveled twenty years back in time. As if that wasn’t peculiar enough, she meets her biological father just six days before his murder. So, now, she’s given a second chance to save him and grow up with the father she always wanted to have in her life. Little did she know that to save him, she finds herself involved in drug trafficking investigation with no one to trust and everyone to suspect.
But messing with time is dangerous. Can she really rewrite something that’s already written?
It’s quite remarkable to see the way Skylar matures emotionally throughout the story. She discovers hidden aspects of herself. Skylar is such a unique character. She’s intelligent, charismatic, sympathetic, and brave enough to put her life on the line for people she’s just met.
It’s a quick read, but the story is well-written. Kaylin McFarren manages to orchestrate the plot between present and past beautifully so that the reader doesn’t get confused. High Flying is an amazing suspense thriller, full of twists and surprises. It’s a book about second chances, forgiveness, and finding out who you really are. It’s the first book I’ve read written by Kaylin McFarren and it certainly won’t be the last one. A must-read for thriller book seekers!
