Hotel Bruce
Hotel Bruce is the picture book sequel to Ryan Higgins’s Mother Bruce–a hilarious case of mistaken identity in which four goslings imprint on a bear. “Goslings always follow their mother, even if SHE is a HE and HE is a bear.” They insist Bruce migrate with them for the winter. Reminiscent of a scene from the first Shrek movie, Bruce and the goslings return to discover their home is occupied by a host of woodland creatures. Things go from bad to worse until Bruce loses his temper and kicks everyone out.
How Bruce ends up in a bellhop outfit and why a VW-busload of elephants show up is not clear. But kids won’t mind. They’ll just laugh at the mayhem and at the sweet ending.
The illustrations are gorgeous. The characters are loaded with personality, and their expressions marvelously convey frustration, humor, resignation, and glee. The nature background scenes have a richness and texture that will entice readers to climb in and go exploring–even in the end papers. This art could be framed and mounted on a wall.
