House 23: A Thriller
How do you move on after the woman you love is murdered? When your family and community shun you–even after police fail to make a case against you? For Joseph Lee, you hide from the world and wallow in misery and solitude. Until the unexpected happens. When a woman who looks remarkably like his dead wife moves in across the street, Lee is befriended by her and her husband. Is this the start of something new for Joseph, or is this couple hiding a sinister secret that will upend his life once more?
House 23 is intriguing because it starts after a traditional murder mystery is left unsolved. It informs us and makes us wonder how the narrative can continue from here. That tone is crucial, since the thriller element really emerges from the reader’s mind more than the narrative. As Joseph bonds with his new neighbors, the reader suspects something will go terribly wrong, but you never know when. It’s a very clever and effective tool, one employed with style by Yance.
Although the book hinges on a twist, you’re already so invested in Joseph’s plight that, whether you buy the twist or not, Yance already has you. Color me impressed.
