Jagged Little Pill: The Novel
Told from the perspectives of five teenagers, Jagged Little Pill: The Novel is based on the hit musical and Alanis Morissette’s best-selling album. Five teens (Frankie, Jo, Nick, Phoenix, and Bella), living in suburban Connecticut, all want different things. It’s not until a tragic event at a party that forces the five teens and those around them to deal with the aftermath.
Jagged Little Pill: The Novel packs a lot of major events and themes into this quick and easy read. It’s a very honest and heartfelt story where the characters confront drug addiction and overdose, sexual assault, MeToo, and social and racial issues. All the main characters were very relatable and flawed and surprisingly likable. Maybe the one character I wasn’t too fond of was Jo. I found her neediness rather annoying. I didn’t even know there was a musical based on Alanis Morissette’s music. It’s made me want to revisit her music and listen to the Jagged Little Pill album as an adult. I highly recommend this amazing book for any teens or adults who love contemporary YA stories.
