Little Moon
Inspired by the light of the moon, the little squid leaves behind the lost feelings she had as she swam to find her place in the world. She started deep in the ocean as a little round egg. As she searched, her path was littered with debris and clogged with derricks pumping oil, much more deadly than her own squirt of ink. She felt very lost. But when she learned to lighten up, her world changed and she found her place.
The illustrations in this book are beautiful. They are created by the author, who is a trained architect with an obviously high aesthetic sensibility. The story of oil derricks and debris in the ocean will interest the adult reader and their children. The hero of the book is an Euprymna scollopes (bobtail squid), native to the Hawaiian Islands. The back of the book features clear information about the squid and the dangers it does face. If, like the author, you dream of seeing Antartica before it is swallowed by “a giant iguana,” you will love this whimsical yet important book.
