In the world of 1980s Los Angeles, the adult entertainment world was at the peak of its money and star-making power. Videos were being made, produced, and distributed to adults all across the world from Los Angeles, and it was a place where people came to find themselves and make themselves, and that is true of the two protagonists, Jude and Winnie. The book begins with Jude setting off to Los Angeles to find Winnie, her friend, after she graduates from reform school. After falling into a world of drugs, sex, and alcohol, Jude eventually finds her friend, who is now dancing under the name Velvet. The two then reconnect and try to find a way out of their current lives and try to imagine a different life together before the current run of alcohol, sex, and drugs takes its toll and possibly their lives, in a world where AIDS is starting to make its rounds. While the book can be dark and bleak, especially in the first half, there are moments of light as the two friends work together. Ultimately, this is a fantasy, as many people did not escape this world even with the best of intentions.
