Mabel is an ill-mannered young fox. Mabel tricks everyone so she can be first in line. If she wants something that is hard to get, Mabel walks away with her nose in the air, saying she doesn’t want it. When Mabel meets Chester, she finds it’s nice to have a friend, but Chester ends their friendship when Mabel takes a toy that isn’t hers and is rude when he asks her what is wrong. In time, Mabel misses her friend, becomes more considerate of others, and finds she suddenly has many friends. Finally, Mabel tries to apologize to Chester, which is what he wants, and they, too, become friends again.

Ariel Bernstein’s Mabel Wants a Friend is a wonderful book to gently help young readers realize how their own behavior affects others’ happiness and, in turn, their own. Secondarily, this book sends a great message about holding friends accountable when they do not treat you with consideration. This book is a great choice for any child having issues with wanting everything their way.
