Made for Love: A Novel
Hazel’s husband wants to implant a chip into her brain so that he can see all the memories and thoughts she has. Hazel doesn’t want to have her brain implanted, so she goes home to spend some time with her father, who has recently ordered a new sex doll for a companion and has no time for his only child. All the while, Jasper is having strange feelings about dolphins after surviving an attack from one. Technology and love and privacy are all shown in a strange light through strange people. What we do for love is often weird but never this weird.
Nutting has given the world a funny book with a very grotesque idea of love. There are some great lines and ideas that make you do a second take. That second take will be the last time the ideas really stand out to you, though, because they are at their best when first presented and never get fully developed, much like the characters who don’t get enough personality. The love presented here is not healthy, but at the very least it is interesting.
