Mulan: The Legend of the Woman Warrior
China is at war, and to fight off a major threat, the emperor is recruiting at least one person to fight from every family. Mulan’s family is distressed to receive this news, as her father is old and not particularly healthy, while her brother is far too young to join the army. Mulan, being a “strong and able girl,” offers to go, even though she is a woman and the army only wants men. So she goes in disguise. For more than twelve years, Mulan fights for her family and her country. She rises through the ranks and is honored by the emperor himself, but all she really wants is to return to her own home. Will her comrades ever learn the truth about her? Will it even matter?
Fans of the animated Disney movie (and those excited for the upcoming live adaptation) should be sure to pick up Mulan: The Legend of the Woman Warrior. This particular retelling of the classic story doesn’t feature catchy music, but it tells the story in a straightforward manner that will keep younger listeners (and readers) enthralled. The pictures are gorgeous, giving readers a clear visual into what life may have been like for the famous warrior. Mulan is a hero to all children, and they’ll love this book!
