Nebula Awards Showcase 2018
As shown in the Nebula Awards Showcase 2018 edited by Jane Yolen, 2018 was a terrific and diverse year for the field. The short stories were confessional and dark but bold, with narrators–and sometimes monsters–deciding to act first rather that waiting around to be victims. In the Novelette section, one will find thought out and sometimes alien worlds that contain played out adventures. There is no full novella here but twelve complete tales and excerpts. Sadly also missing is set aside poems and a story by a Grand Master, but we have in Jane Yolen an editor instead who won a Nebula award and provides something fascinating by others instead.
It’s maybe not filled with the wonder of bygone eras, but some things have become old hat now (it is harder to take people out into space with new ideas now), and despite that, there are some profundities as well as some old wounds open again. Here one will find winners who have become contestants and contestants who have become winners with the new tide of the last few years. Dangerous sentient deserts, poisoners, and strange birders, again, in these environmentally wrought times? Oh, come on, Nebula voters.
