Tilla longs to earn her father’s love and attention. He is the ruler of the Western Province, and she is his bastard. Once he had secured a wife and true children, he cast her off and forgot about her like yesterday’s leftovers. At her father’s banquet to welcome the Princess Lyriana, the princess herself joins them at the bastards’ table, where they set up an adventure for later in the evening. When they stumble upon a crime they were never meant to see, the only way to save themselves and the princess is to go into hiding, but it will take everything they have to get to safety and right the wrongs they witnessed.

This fast-paced novel set in a magical but medieval time is reminiscent of Jennifer Nielsen’s False Prince series. Indeed, Tilla could be Sage’s sister. The bastards prove that parentage is no recipe for strength and resolve, and their parents realize this a little too late. The dialogue is quick and witty, and the interactions among the bastards make this book one to relish and enjoy. Readers will be thrilled to see the sequel comes out June of 2018, which is not soon enough.
