What interested me most about Saluting The Blood of Heroes – Behind The Apocalyptic Film is that Danny Stewart understands the appeal of David Webb Peoples’s film as something tactile. He is writing about a cult object built out of dust, bruises, strange rules, and a world that feels scavenged rather than sleek. The best parts of this book stay close to that physical atmosphere, especially when Stewart writes about the film’s Australian locations, its stripped-down post-apocalyptic design, and the way Jugger turns violence into ritual.

The book is at its strongest when it narrows its focus. Stewart clearly loves *The Blood of Heroes/The Salute of the Jugger*, and that enthusiasm becomes useful in the central chapter, the cast appreciations, the discussion of the real-world Jugger sport, and especially the David Webb Peoples interview. Peoples’s comments about the film’s failed release, its retitling for American audiences, and its later cult afterlife give the project a real center of gravity. Those pages feel like the book’s best argument for why this movie still matters.

I also appreciated the attention to landscape. Stewart is right to emphasize how much Coober Pedy and the broader Australian wasteland contribute to the film’s identity. This is a sports movie, yes, but it is also a place-driven vision of exhaustion, endurance, and social collapse.

The only problem is that it sprawls far beyond its best subject. Long detours into neighboring dystopian films, compilations of outside reviews, and reference-heavy side roads weaken the momentum. The prose can be repetitive and rough enough that the book sometimes reads more like an enthusiast’s archive than a fully shaped critical study.

But there is still real value here. Readers drawn to cult cinema, post-apocalyptic film history, and the odd afterlife of once-overlooked movies will find a book that preserves a genuine corner of genre culture with affection and persistence.
