S.K. Dunstall is the pen name of two Australian sisters of the bestselling science fiction series Linesman. Now Dunstall presents us with their latest Stars Uncharted,a rollicking space adventure loaded with action and just enough unique worldbuilding to addict readers. Alternating between the points of view of two main characters, Josune Arriola and Nika Rik Terri, each hard-edged and resilient women, the novel presents itself as a sort of treasure hunt, but is clearly more interested in telling the story of the treasure hunters.

After salvaging the famed exploration ship Hassim, Josune and her captain Hammond are beset by corporate commandos dead set on eliminating them and retrieving a precious map the salvagers now possess. At the same time, Nika is a specialist in body modification, something that has become ubiquitous in this future, and is able to change virtual everything about your body for the right price. When she accidentally creates a machine allowing consciousness to swap bodies for a short period of time, she runs aground of the same mafia-esque corporate thugs harrying Josune. Fleeing thugs, Nika books passage on Hammond’s ship as they attempt to out run their foes.

Dunstall’s great skill is to reveal and revel in their characters, allowing the action to show us who they are and why they make the decisions they do. The prose is fluid, easy to take in, but never simple, and keeps readers entranced by the action, making Stars Uncharted a superb sci-fi novel.
