The Couple at Number 9: A Novel
Saffron and her boyfriend Tom are The Couple at Number 9. They inherited the place from Saffy’s grandmother and as they are about to be parents, they’ve decided to undergo some renovations, including expanding the kitchen into the backyard. What the builders discover though, is the remains of a woman and a man, who had been buried for at least thirty years, back when her grandmother still lived there. However, Saffron’s grandmother has Alzheimer’s, so even though it’s clear she remembers something, it comes and goes. What Saffron discovers is far beyond what she could have ever imagined.
This was a marvelously well-written story. As new characters were introduced, you could tell they were important and would be tied to the main characters, but it wasn’t clear how until well towards the end. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and while it was crazy, it still came off as plausible. While this is my first Claire Douglas story, it will definitely not be my last. If you are looking to add a book to your list, no matter the season, I highly recommend this one.
