The Kill Society: A Sandman Slim Novel
Stark is a killer, and he’s damn good at it. But now he’s dead, trapped in the far reaches of the underworld with a brigade of murderous looters on a holy crusade. Forced to join them, Stark’s only goal is to return to the world of the living, but with renegade angels, old enemies, and new threats abounding, that’ll be tough. And there are even worse places than Hell he could end up…
The Kill Society is the ninth book in the Sandman Slim series, but Kadrey proves there’s still plenty of life left in this complicated, insane universe. It’s every bit as dark and funny as the previous installments, and Stark is perhaps even more caustic than usual (seeing as he may be trapped in the underworld forever), unleashing sarcastic rejoinders with both barrels.
What could have been a placeholding Fury Road ripoff instead feels like an invigorating change of pace. Throw in a few unexpected cameos, plus one monstrously big reveal, and you’ve got a great time.
I’m not so sure about the eleventh hour twist, but since most of the other twists worked out nicely, I’ll trust Kadrey on this one. Either way, I can’t wait to see what comes next.
