The Perfect Marriage: A Novel
The Perfect Marriage tells the story of a woman named Jessica who is married to James. They are what many people would define as the perfect couple. Both Jessica and James have ex-spouses. Wayne, Jessica’s ex-husband, shares a teenage son with her and they get along without any real animosity. Haley, James’ ex-wife, on the other hand, is vindictive and angry James left her for Jessica.
Although the book started out building suspense, it ended up dragging on. After the climax of the book, the letdown was a slow and painfully boring story with repetitive, unnecessary details thrown in to find out whodunnit. The characters are well-developed but it almost seemed like they were all in separate storylines because they were all so neurotic and in their own heads all the time. There really wasn’t too much of a mystery here. The climax happened unexpectedly and leaves the reader feeling like he or she skipped a whole part of the book. What could have been a really great mystery just fell flat for me.
