The Perks of Loving a Wallflower
The Perks of Loving a Wallflower by Erica Ridley is enchanting from beginning to end. The second in the Wild Wynchester series, this novel features a WLW storyline set in the Regency period in England. While this can sometimes be a challenge for authors and an exercise in patience for readers, Ridley is a master at her craft and creates incredibly complex characters with chemistry that jumps right off the page, and whose dialogue and subsequent actions come across as genuine to their personalities rather than as a plot device to move the story along. This novel follows the unruly Wynchester sibling Tommy, a gender-nonconforming woman madly enamored with the intelligent bluestocking daughter of the well-to-do family across the street. Philippa would much rather be left to her books and charity work since no man has ever stirred her heart to affection, but with her parents insisting on a socially advantageous marriage, she has little choice in the matter. With a series of rare illuminated manuscripts to steal and decode, and a shameless villain stealing credit for his niece’s war-winning efforts, this novel is brimming with action, intrigue, and romance of the highest caliber.
