The Secrets She Keeps: A Novel
Agatha has been watching Meghan for a while. She knows everything about her. Meghan has the seemingly perfect life, one that Agatha has wished for her whole life. She longs for the day when they will be friends. Now that they are pregnant at the same time, it’s sure to happen right? After some carefully orchestrated events, Meg and Agatha seem on the path to lifelong friendship. But their due dates are coming up, and everyone’s lives will be changed when we discover The Secrets She Keeps.
It’s always interesting reading a book knowing something bad is going to happen but you aren’t quite sure from what direction. This story is told from Agatha and Meg’s point of view, alternating between chapters. You feel this connection with both of them, so when the worst happens you feel betrayed and you can almost understand. It is a refreshing storytelling method, this idea of identifying with the criminal because you know what drove them to it instead of vilifying them the entire time. It makes it more real because you see every character as a person not an idea, and we all have parts of us we don’t wish anyone to see. We know what they did was wrong, but it becomes easier to see why they did. For me, I always want to know more about the motive behind actions and why the crime was committed more than about the how. This book did a wonderful job bringing both characters to life and reminding us we are all human.
If you enjoy psychology and what is going on with people behind what they show us, you will enjoy this novel. The author did a fantastic job with his characters, even though he’s male and his main characters are female. There is depth there as well as authenticity. This story is very well written and worth your time.
