Our busy lives make it difficult to cook healthy and appetizing meals for our families. Some have come to believe that cooking healthy and delicious meals quickly is only a fantasy. This book debunks the myth by providing recipes that are easy to make and delicious. To entice readers, every recipe is accompanied by a picture of the finished product, so readers know what it should look like when complete.

The book starts with a short introduction on the spices, their characteristics, where they can be bought, and the recipes in the book which use them. The recipes start after that, and are divided into six sections. The first part contains thirteen appetizer recipes (although some of these appetizers, such as “breakfast egg and avocado pastries with harissa salsa” and “breakfast pita with lamb, tomatoes, and feta,” are enough to be main meals themselves). The second section (also containing thirteen recipes) focuses on the main meal. Next is a chapter devoted to soups and salads (fourteen recipes). The following chapter (nineteen recipes) aims at providing vegetarian recipes that could serve as either appetizers or main meals. Twelve recipes of sauces, dips, and spreads follow, and the last chapter has nine recipes of desserts and drinks. The writing style is conversational and encourages substitutions to suit individual tastes.

Sprinkled throughout the book are tips that pertain to that recipe. The best part of the book are the awesome pictures that make the dish highly appetizing. Readers looking for authenticity may be surprised to find ingredients that may not be Mediterranean (such as chimichurri, which is from South America). However, the book’s intent is to bring Mediterranean flavors using what is readily available in American grocery stores. In this regard, the book remains true to its objective. From the pictures, the dishes look complicated to make, but in reality, they are easy to prepare. Shortcuts abound, but the objective is to make healthy, flavorful meals on busy nights. In this regard, it is an excellent reference.
