When Among Crows by Veronica Roth
Dymitr is on the hunt for Baba Jaga, the most powerful witch in the world. Ala has a blood curse, passed to her from her mother. Every day, she awaits death to take her. So when Dymitr approaches her with an offer that might save her life, how can she refuse? Niko, really, has nothing to gain by joining their quest, yet something is intriguing about the human, and he can’t help but let himself get dragged into it. Each of them has secrets, ones that if they can’t trust each other with, may be their downfall, but can the hunter and the hunted really become allies?
Based on Slavic folklore, When Among Crows is a story about trust, unlikely allies, and redemption. Every character has a reason to be in the story, and each gives a glimpse into the world they live in. Though I do wish there were more world-building and explanation of the magic system. I love the descriptions; many of them are just the right amount of poetic, yet others are blunt when they need to be. There are some gruesome scenes, but the descriptions gave me just enough to again it and not be overly done.
