When Black Girls Dream Big
Writer Tanisia Moore presents When Black Girls Dream Big as a powerful ode to her debut picture book, I Am My Ancestors’ Wildest Dreams. For Black children – regardless of gender – this is a refreshing, affirming book filled with Black heroines who have succeeded to the heights of their careers and contributions to the community.
Beautifully illustrated by Robert Paul Jr., the picture book features twelve role models who have reached the apex of achievement in various fields, such as the sciences, politics, sports, and law. It features contemporary figures like Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and former First Lady Michelle Obama to legendary figures such as suffragist and abolitionist Sojourner Truth and writer Zora Neale Hurston. These Black women were the “firsts” in their fields of excellence, showcasing not just their achievements, but their resolve, hard work, and resilience to overcome all odds.
While the book celebrates Black excellence, it also poignantly reminds us of the work that still needs to be done. The artist Robert Paul Jr. offers a heartfelt tribute to Black women who were honored by the #SayHerName movement. He acknowledges that despite the exemplary advances, we have a collective responsibility to ensure safety and thriving for all Black women and girls.
