Wild About Whales

This book is one more in a series to help young readers appreciate the other creatures we share the world with. It starts by defining a whale, describing its anatomy, and their characteristic features observed when whale watching. After that, it focuses on whale migration, communication, diet, and behavioral attributes. Next are comparisons among the various whale species (largest, smallest, longest migration, longest life span, etc). This is followed by what makes some of the better-known species special. The last few pages are dedicated to whale mythology and conservation efforts.

There is an equal mix of text and illustrations. The vocabulary and sentence structure are suited for fourth and fifth graders (however, adults can also learn from this book). Most chapters claim a double spread – making it easy to dip in and out of those areas that interest readers. Illustrations burst with shades of blue and green, and give the impression of being underwater (alongside these magnificent creatures). This is an excellent book for a budding marine biologist, whale watcher, or just someone interested in whales.
