Southernmost
After a devastating flood in Tennessee, preacher Asher Sharp extends a hand to anyone who needs help–including two gay men. His wife, Lydia, forces the men from their home, and his small-town congregation is no more welcoming when the men try to make a place for themselves in Asher’s church. Disgusted by what he has come to believe is fear and prejudice disguised as faith, he leaves his church, his wife, and the very faith that once led him to renounce his own gay brother, Luke. When Lydia secures full custody of their son, Justin, Asher is desperate. He takes Justin and heads south, to Key West, Florida, in a frantic effort to find Luke, atone for past mistakes, and forge a new life–knowing full well that his trip is doomed.
As Asher befriends other wayward travelers in this strange new city, he must face the complicated question of his own beliefs and the reality that forgiveness isn’t easily won when the transgressions are grave. Bracing, honest, and luminous, Southernmost is a beautiful portrait of a father’s love, a faithful man’s search for new meaning, and Key West itself, where gaudy, touristy splendor hides the city’s truest soul.
