The Girls Weekend

June hasn’t seen her closest friends from college in ten years, except for Em. Then Sadie, the group’s self-appointed ring leader, invites them all to her estate on Fidalgo Island for her cousin Amy’s baby shower. Em convinces June to go, so they head up from California for The Girls Weekend. It takes about five minutes for everything to go wrong, as there are so many tensions and secrets, it’s hard to enjoy anything. That night they all party a little too hard and wake up to find Sadie is missing and there is blood on the wall. Everyone has a motive for getting rid of Sadie, but it looks the worst for June who dated Sadie’s husband before they were married. June is going to have to untangle this web of lies if she doesn’t want to go to prison for a crime she didn’t commit.

I began this book with a little trepidation since the plot is very similar to Ruth Ware’s In a Dark, Dark Wood. After reading it, I will admit that it is very close but this story is far better and more worth your time. I could possibly be biased, though, since I live where this story takes place and there is nothing like reading a mystery taking place in an area you know and love. However, I think Gehrman’s writing style and characters were much more nuanced and had a depth to them I did not find in Ware’s work. I highly recommend this.
