The Spy Coast: A Thriller (The Martini Club)
Tess Gerritsen, the author of thirty novels, including the Rizzoli and Isles series, opens The Spy Coast with a chilling flashback scenario in Paris where a frantic woman named Diana realizes she has become a target. Diana grabs her go bag, kills her pursuers, and flees Paris. Whew!
Now, prepare to spend time becoming acquainted with a group of lovely older people who share a secret with Maggie Porter. They are all former CIA operatives. Maggie took early retirement because an assignment went horribly sideways. At last Maggie has found a peaceful, quiet life as a chicken farmer in rural Purity, Maine alongside endearing neighbor Luther and his granddaughter Callie. They also farm chickens.
Maggie and her former spy friends have a book club. Tonight, the meeting at Lloyd and Ingrid’s home begins with martinis in hand, and then this tale takes a sharp turn. Luther and Callie have found a dead body on Maggie’s driveway. Purity’s acting police chief Jo Thibodeau is called to Maggie’s farm, where she eagerly jumps at the chance to work a murder case.
The beginning chapters are a bit choppy; however, readers should be patient. Tess Gerritsen delivers a thrilling, endearing read.
