Boundless: A Drizzt Novel (Generations)
Boundless by RA Salvatore continues the dual timelines of Drizzt and Zaknafein Do’Urden. Centuries in the past, Zak faces two assassination attempts and ends up on a course pitting him opposite Jarlaxle’s interests. Present-day finds Gauntlgrym and Luskan under siege by demonic forces. Worse, relentless retrievers hunt Zak and Drizzt.
This was an awesome continuation following Timeless! I’m rather thankful for how often in Drizzt’s philosophical musings that he’s mentioned the skills of Grandmaster Kane. It gives me hope for the next book because this one ends with an AAAHHHH! moment.
Zak of the present day shows some positive growth during the siege of Gauntlgrym. He and Jarlaxle take point with some pretty impressive fighting acrobatics that helps thin the ranks of the demon invaders, and he’s even willing to lead the retriever away once they realize it’s hunting him. Thankfully, Bruenor has a better plan!
One character, who’s always been a favorite, did make me want to give him a good thwack, though- Gromph. I wasn’t surprised at a certain choice he made. Another character pointed out later that drow males tend to be broken by their very culture, and showing sympathy or compassion is seen weakness. I hope he’ll have a turnaround in the next book.
