Respected scientist Erin Gilbert has worked hard to put her painful past behind her, and with an upcoming tenured position in her grasp, she’s ready to move forward. That is, until a stranger turns up in her office with a hair-brained tale involving a ghost and a copy of a book on the paranormal, penned by Erin and her long-ago friend Abby. Suddenly Erin finds herself teaming up with Abby, Abby’s quirky engineer, Holtzman, and a street-wise MTA employee named Patty in order to contain the paranormal activity that’s taking over the city. It’s a race against time to stop a madman from unleashing the apocalypse, and only the four-woman Ghostbuster team stands between New York City and annihilation. Holder does a decent job of translating the Ghostbusters screenplay into book format, but as with most translations, there’s definitely something lost. At times the story feels awkward and forced–a byproduct of an author’s attempt to tell a story that’s not theirs. This becomes especially apparent for those stretches of the story that were originally portrayed through a strictly visual medium. The story is solid and overall makes for a decent read, provided you don’t expect any deep insights or enlightenment.
