Mary McCarthy: The Complete Fiction

We rated this book:

Please grab a martini. Let’s go back to the 50s with Mary McCarthy. This landmark edition will provide an entire summer’s worth of reading. But this is no beach fare; the stories are devastating precisely because they are set 40 or more years ago. Despite writing domestic drama, these stories are not soap-opera offerings. McCarthy has an edge to her stories that allows one to see under the surface of her characters’ lives. There is also an immediacy about the stories. With our knowledge of the inevitable social mores of the time, the reader will want to jump into the storyline to wise up the stereotypical 50s woman.

While best known for her novel The Group, which was unfortunately turned into a soap opera movie, this volume will provide a reader with undoubted proof of McCarthy’s genius for storytelling and character building. Please give this beautiful collection to a friend. It is well done with a ribbon for place-holding in a two volume set. Highly recommended.
