Maybe He Just Likes You
Middle school is tough. Not just the school stuff, but the friend stuff, and the boy stuff. While throwing Mina’s best friend an impromptu birthday celebration, an innocent hug from the boys goes a little too long. Then a request from the boys for a hug turns up a little lie. There is unwanted touching and some things shared that make Mila uncomfortable. When she brings this up with her friends, Zara just tells her to quit being a baby while Omi, though somewhat sympathetic, is simply trying to keep the peace. In addition, her mother’s job situation is precarious and going to the gym for karate lessons and yoga doesn’t seem to be the answer, but those lessons just might pay off.
Dee has taken a topic not explored nearly enough in middle grades and given it a voice. Mila is a strong girl sharing what many have experienced in an age-appropriate, believable way. She has given Mila the bravery needed to overcome such a situation to show that such behaviors and disrespect should not be tolerated. A book for girls and boys alike, this one will spark needed conversations.
