On the Hook: A Crochet Mystery
Molly Pink finds herself in the middle of another mystery. When her friend Elisse gets her real estate license, she accompanies her on a secret showing of the famous Timothy Clark’s house. Soon after, Molly gets a visit from her ex, Detective Barry Greenberg, informing her that not only is Timothy dead but her scarf was found at the house. Worse, Barry seems to think she knows more than she’s letting on. Molly picks up the investigation herself, with all threads leading to Adele, who expected to become a star thanks to Timothy’s workshops. The others in the workshop reveal how they were led to believe the same. Any one of them could be behind the murder. Molly is determined to find the killer before Barry learns the truth.
Betty Hechtman adds a humorous touch to Molly’s adventures–from Molly sneaking into a house twice, once when it’s a crime scene, to sliding down a muddy hill with her two friends–that makes them feel more like delightful capers. Her dating life plays a role throughout the story as two significant exes make their way back into her life. Her chemistry and tension with both give the story the light touch of a love triangle. It’s clear in how Molly turns away from anything serious and wants only casual relationships and that she’s living for herself and her own way of things. While she’s dealing with avoiding Barry and having confusion over Mason re-entering her life, she ends up with a surprising role helping a friend’s stuffy brother-in-law reinvent himself and find his way back into the dating world. On the Hook is a delightful and charming mystery about friendship and relationships.
