One Red Sock

The little purple hippo is getting dressed to go out. When she puts on her first sock, it is bright red, but when she puts her second sock on, it isn’t red — it is blue. Well, that won’t do. She takes off the blue sock and puts on another, but that one is green. That doesn’t match. This goes on for several changes, and the little purple hippo finally settles on a polka dot sock. The polka dot sock doesn’t match the red sock, but at least it matches the little purple hippo’s room. It will just have to do. And off the little purple hippo goes, leaving a little surprise for readers behind.

The message parents will take from this is the old saying, “Perfect is the enemy of excellent.” And the little ones having this book read to them will find their own version of that. The charming rhyming text will give little ones a chance to guess what colors are coming for a fun interaction with the reading. The illustrations by author/illustrator Jennifer Sattler are simple but sweet and fun. This is a delightful book for very young children.
