Stars, Hide Your Fires
The Emperor is hosting a gala to announce his heir, will it be one of his clones? His brother? Cass couldn’t care less, all she knows is that it’s the perfect place to steal a fortune and leave the poor, dust-covered world she calls home. It’s a dangerous game, one where if she’s caught it could mean losing her life. But when the Emperor is murdered and Cass is framed, she must decide whom she can trust and if her stolen gems are worth her life.
The world-building is simple, just enough that it’s clearly alien, science fiction, and futuristic. But I had no idea what was going on with the pronouns and what the “I” conditions were. I don’t know if I just missed the explanation or what, but it made no sense. Other than that, the universe was easy to understand. The characters were all different from each other, some more rounded than others. The mystery itself wasn’t much of one; with very few suspects and a very large clue the characters took no notice of until the end. Overall it was a fast-paced easy read that I enjoyed.
