“I’m alone… I feel lost without Mom, not knowing who I am or where I belong.” Jessie is reeling from the death of her mother and the secrets that were buried with her. She hasn’t slept in days. She hears whispers in the dead of night. She is convinced her landlord is lying to her. And, on top of that, she learns her identity may belong to a young girl who died years ago.

Twenty years earlier, Eden is a happy newlywed, living in a small town in the perfect starter home. The only cloud drifting over her marriage is that she can’t seem to have a child.

Are these two seemingly separate lives intertwined? What has Jessie’s mother hidden from her all these years? Will Jessie find the answers she desperately seeks before sleeplessness robs her of all reasoning? And is Eden the key that will unlock Jessie’s past?

When the Lights Go Out moves at a frenetic pace with Jessie’s increasing panic moving to a conclusion that is less than satisfying. While the story is gripping, the ending seems hurried and rushed, as if the author realized she needed to wrap up the book quickly. Nevertheless, Kubica’s 5th thriller is sure to be a success and will keep readers guessing until the end.
