Our planet is an amazing place. Every part of the world has areas of extraordinary wilderness, each with unique animals and plants that can’t be found anywhere else. Many of these species are in danger of becoming extinct. This oversized (14.3 x 11.6”) picture book will take young readers and listeners to sixteen different environments around the world, such as the tropical rainforest of New Guinea, the Boreal Forest stretching from the north of Canada and Alaska to Russia, the Sinharaja Forest Reserve in Sri Lanka, and India’s Sundarbans National Park. Each area is represented by a spread, beautifully illustrated by Marcos Navarro with stylized drawings drenched in rich colors and filled with a wide variety of flora and fauna of the region, as well as a small amount of text by author Mia Cassany, describing the area and the type of plants and animals that reside there. Her writing is straightforward and should encourage young readers to study the illustrations to find the different species in the drawings and to generate questions. There are six pages in the back of the book that identify the animals depicted on the spreads and provide some more information. This book is a real treasure.
