Best Dips, Apps, & Sides : Budget-Proof Snacks, Spreads, and Side Dishes

This small trade paperback is filled with mouthwatering food photos. Every recipe in //Best Dips, Apps, & Sides// is illustrated by a full-page photo. In four chapters author Monica Sweeney offers recipes from appetizers through more hearty dinner items. The recipes are relatively simple but you’ll find some more complicated ones with a long list of ingredients. Sweeney’s recipe writing is telegraph style. She gives just the bare basics of instructions; only the most advanced home cooks would be able to follow without scratching the head in frustration. The recipe instructions and ingredient specifications are incomplete. You come across ingredients such as one can diced tomatoes—but what size? Or half pound sausage—is it raw, smoked, cooked? She soaks corncobs in water before grilling, the water containing one tablespoon salt, but she neglects to give the amount of water. Such errors are not uncommon throughout. The very first recipe, hummus, is questionable: one-and-half tablespoon salt in two-and-half cup hummus? Could that be right? In spinach tart the recipe calls for spinach and Swiss chard placed over puff pastry. We don’t know if the greens are chopped or whole. Recipe layout and cross referenced index are very good.
